FAQ: About Libre Graphics World
Why did you start the project?
In early May 2009 a small group of contributors to free/libre software sat down at Libre Graphics Meeting conference to talk about ways to keep more people alerted on what is happening with free/libre design software and what really can be done using it. The discussion was in many ways triggered by Ginger Coons's talk "Ownership and Standards: Why Designers are Slow to Adopt Open Source". We came up with several ideas, and this project is one of them.

So why do you use the world "libre"?
The word "free" have several meanings, and people often confuse them, thinking that free software stands for freeware. At the same time "libre" helps understanding that the talk is about free-as-in-speech.

But then in the Web Links section you list a number of closed source and commercial applications.
We know that the world isn't perfect, so we have a quite relaxed attitude towards closed source software. Often people refuse to use Linux because they need an application with a particular set of features around which their workflow is based. So if they can switch to Linux and use a closed source application that does the job, while some free/libre alternative is shaping up, why not help them?

I've noticed that you have a Russian version of the web site. Is it another project of yours?
In fact, Libre Graphics World is an English version of linuxgraphics.ru :) The so called Russian version was officially announced in May 2006 and contains 70 articles and ca. 1000 news items at the day of announcing Libre Graphics World. So it was another reason to start this project: it felt infinitely strange to have a quite verbose "local" web site and not have a counterpart for a much wider audience. Most internal work on both sites was done by sK1 team (kudos, guys!). If you have a web site that does the same (news on free/libre software, reviews, tutorials, interviews, forum etc.), let us know, and we will link to you. Or we can share our setup with you, if you want to create German or Japanese or Hindi version of the project.

It doesn't look like a Web 2.0 style web site, eh?
Well, we make it easy to bookmark news and article on gazillion of Web 2.0 projects and we have an automagical crossposting of news to Twitter and Identi.ca (we thought about Facebook and decided not to go for it right now). In the close future we will investigate possibilities to introduce OpenID authorization.
