Ubuntu font family goes public

Canonical finally made preliminary versions of its own font family public. The Ubuntu font family, part of new Ubuntu brand, is developed by type designers from Dalton Maag.

The font family includes four basic styles: Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic. By spring four more styles are expected: Condensed, Light, Medium and Monospace.

Unfortunately Canonical decided to go for their own font license despite of relatively wide acknowledgement of Open Font License by community. On the other hand, this license allows free distribution and modification of all type faces, which should be good enough.

You can read more about plans for the font family in Ubuntu wiki, and Canonical designers team has a blog too.
