Get ready for Libre Graphics Meeting 2013

There are just a few days left to submit talk proposals for Libre Graphics Meeting, a major annual event for users and developers of free software for graphic design, photography, 3D rendering and animation.

This year LGM is taking place in Madrid on April 10-13 and will be hosted and organized by Medialab-Prado.

What's so special about LGM?

First of all, there is no other event where you can meet developers of GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Scribus, Blender and other applications all at once.

Secondly, LGM is where teams work on interoperability between various applications and use the chance to make some badass programming. Without the conference, by now you probably wouldn't have:

  • OpenRaster file format for exchanging layered images between, GIMP, Krita and MyPaint;
  • LensFun database used by darktable, UFRaw, digiKam and other digital photography applications;
  • support for text objects in libcdr.

And that's just off top of my head.

Finally, LGM is where decision-making actually happens. Teams use the event to plan their future work. E.g. since 2010 the conference hosts annual meetings of the OpenICC group whose members work on the color management stack in Linux.

Apart from the usual stream of presentations and talks there are likely to be workshops by artists. LGW isn't in a position to make promises, but Ramon Miranda was planning to attend and do a workshop on digital painting.

If you are considering active participation at LGM, you can register now and request reimbursement of travel expenses. However the talk submission window closes on February 15.

Not going this time?

If you are not attending and still would like to support the event, you can donate money which will be spent on the said travel expenses by teams.

This year there are several fundraisers:

Pick your favorite. A little bird showed LGW the submitted proposals so far, and it looks like LGM2013 is going to surpass the expectations once again. The preliminary program will be publicly announced next week.

  1. Not going myself but would like to add another fundraiser to your list. Gustavo Gonzalez of 2D vector animation tool Tupi is having one for his team. They tried last year as well but didn’t succeed in getting financed. This year looks brigther though.

    David, that’s the second one in the list :)

  3. Gustavo’s funding was secured yesterday so now that campaign continues to gather funds for Tatica. Notice this edit at the end of the desc: Edit: the time for Onyeibo already is gone, so he will not be at LGM this year. So I deleting the costs for him, also correcting the sums as we have newer informations now, we had a lot of big donations where paypal did not get so much as on smaller sums.

  4. “A little bird showed LGM the submitted proposals so far,”

    In that instance, you want ‘LGW’
