GIMP gets canvas rotation

GIMP gets canvas rotation

Since last night unstable version of GIMP has canvas rotation. The new feature is mostly useful for digital painting and drawing, as well as for preparing textures in CG, where you need to work on parts of a picture while viewing them from a different angle.

Canvas rotation was originally prototyped by sigetch in the GIMP Painter fork which could be considered to be a playground for various new features in upstream GIMP. Here's a quick demo:

The canvas rotation mode can be activated with any currently selected tool. Just press Shift and start dragging the middle mouse button up or down. Use the additional Ctrl modifier to rotate with 15° step.

To reset the rotation either choose “View / Rotate / Reset to 0°” command in menu or use Ctrl + Shift + dragging.

Canvas rotation isn't 100% complete yet, expect further refining. The feature was implemented by Michael Natterer and is expected to be available in v2.10 (no release date estimations possible at the moment). You can also sponsor this little project.

  1. My neck is feeling very thankful for this new feature!

  2. This is a really exciting new feature!

Usually, drawing and painting in Gimp using a tablet is a pain because you don’t have the flexibility of rotating the canvas and achieving the best angles to work on certain parts of your art.

But it seems this will no longer be the case with the new version!

    Awesome, but I’d love to see sigetch other implementations (MyPaint brush engine in GIMP) in trunk too :{

  4. YaaaaaaaaaaY!!!
    That’s excellent news :DDDDD

  5. RaphaelBarros > well that’s planned. See 2 news before on libregraphicsworld:

  6. I am so happy that this is going to happen and will be more than pleased to pay Michael once it has been released in 2.10 ^^

  7. I look forward for this news!

  8. Great feature ! That is a very nice idea and a great step in the right direction.
    Congratulations !

  9. This is amazing , adding the canvas feature to Gimp will certainly move this project to the new generation : Html5.

  10. Great feature ! This is a really exciting new feature!

  11. tehe articmo,,
    canvasRotation !=

  12. Cool Feature! I can’t wait to use it.

  13. I liked Gimp as a free alternative to Photoshop, but now that Photoshop CS2 is a free download, I have to say that Gimp is useless…

  14. @key logger tehe, but does cs2 have canvas rotation? ;)

btw. cs2 is free to download but it’s not exactly free or gratis, under Adobe’s terms you are only supposed to use the software if you already have a valid PS license.

  15. Been waiting for this feature for a while, cant wait to use it!

  16. Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss…..

  17. “Shift” is Brush Tool to draw a line~Auxiliary key.
    canvas rotation~Can be used “Shift+Space”

  18. CMYK Support :’|

  19. This will be a cool addition thanks for developing it! With the current adoption rate of tablet pc’s using the shift middle mouse button may not be ideal for those users. In fact the lack of a keyboard and mouse buttons is a bit of an issue generally with many existing applications. By the time 2.10 is released the number of artists using tablets will probably be significant. There will probably also be an influx of new tablet owners looking for a cool art package which plays nice with their device. It would be cool if GIMP could meet their needs. I use a tablet plus artdock (autohotkey), which solves some of the KB short cut issues, but many programs are still cumbersome when using touch and pen technology.

Would it be possible to add a horizontal canvas flip option as part of your project?

In this yt vid the Gimp Painter 2.8 user is using flip and rotation which helps create a more fluid workflow.

It will be interesting to see how GIMP adapts to the new pen and touch environment in the coming releases…2.8 was a major step in the right direction IMHO. :)

  20. Middle button….that sucks, I don’t have one as I’m a laptop user and my tablet pen only has two buttons which in gimp are automatically pan/scroll and right click.

@Kirsty, it doesn’t suck, because it’s not the only way to activate canvas rotation :)

  22. nice feature.
I’m new to gimp. Is it possible to flip the canvas?
in matte painting is useful to flip the canvas (horizontally) from time to time, in order to see if everything looks good.
    thanks in advance.
