Ghostscript 9.00 introduces ICC-based color rendering workflow
With this version Ghostscript moves to ICC-based color rendering workflow and uses FreeType for glyph rendering for all fonts except Type3.
With this version Ghostscript moves to ICC-based color rendering workflow and uses FreeType to do glyph rendering for all font types except Type 3.
The new design of Ghostscript allows to plug in 3rd party color management modules, so you can use native CMMs of Windows or Mac OS X, and by default LittleCMS is used. That way you can now manage DeviceN and spot source colors with ICC profiles as well as with non-ICC proprietary methods.
Postscript color objects and non-ICC CIE-based PDF color spaces are converted to equivalent ICC profiles enabling complete color management for all color spaces by an ICC-based CMM.
Moreover, the new version with its new workflow improves performance in the rendering of images, shadings and transparencies.
The second important change is that now FreeType takes care of glyph rendering for all font types except Type 3. This leads to all sorts of improvements including use of TrueType byte code interpreter that is not subject to Microsoft patents anymore.
