Game Development with Blender book giveaway results

We are happy to say that Sebastian got the "Game Development with Blender" book by Dalai Felinto and Mike Pan.

Here are some insights from the people who participated. Since the sampling was tiny, let's call it "fun facts" instead of "statistics".

How long people have been using Blender:

  • Half of the participants are in the "up to 3 years of using Blender" department.
  • 1/8 are in the "10+ years dept".
  • Equal amount of participants are spread across the "4 to 8 years" league.

Even though the sampling is nowhere close to Andrew Price's survey from 2010, the distribution is pretty much the same, and that's a good reason to run a new full survey. It would be particularly interesting to see whether the "3+ years" segment became more even against the "<1 to 3 years" segment.

The most commonly named types of games people want to do with Blender Game Engine are:

  • clever platformers;
  • adventures;
  • open world and sandbox games.

Several participants are doing it for kids and with kids. Two people specifically mentioned Zelda as an inspiration.

Several participants weren't actually interested in games all that much, but rather in the interactivity features — for educational and business purpose.

Two people out of several ones who use Blender professionally mentioned (both directly and indirectly) that it took them two years to go from tinkerer to pro.

Again, since it's fun facts instead of science, let's not treat the results too seriously. At the same time, I think it's a call for a new global survey.
