Gallery 3.0 released with tons of improvements
New version of Gallery, a free web photo gallery CMS, is out with major architectural changes and new features. It's not exactly easy to collect full list of changes, so here are the most significant ones.
First of all, the architecture of the CMS has changed a lot. Gallery now uses Kohana framework, PHP5 and jQuery. After major refactoring unpacked copy of Gallery uses just 4MB of disk space with all the features.
The user interface has been improved in many aspects. As a result, a lot of actions can be done faster now, from rotating (by clicking previews) to editing descriptions in-place.
Interoperability of Gallery has been taken to a new level with introduction of REST API which allows reusing albums and slideshows of an existing gallery in external web and even desktop applications. The new version also features LDAP support.
Configuration of Gallery has been improved as well: there are more configurable options now, organization plug-in was rewritten, the whole CMS can be updated to a new version with a single click too.
Finally, the CMS's engine better supports metadata and is now able to generate separate RSS feeds for comments, new images and videos.
Around 900 tickets were closed in the tracker during this development cycle. If you used Gallery 2 before, there is a plug-in to migrate old database.
