Free ePub authoring tools Sigil and FlightCrew taken over, released

A month ago Strahinja Marković, principal developer of free ePub authoring and validation tools, Sigil and FlightCrew, passed both projects to Calibre's John Schember. Few days ago John finished tying up loose ends and released new versions of both applications.

For Sigil, the ebook authoring tool, this is the first stable release since January, and despite of a very distinctive fixes and clean-ups domination it got quite a few changes that directly affect your productivity.

Sigil 0.4.0, free ePub authoring tool

For instance, dealing with NCX and OPF files has been considerably improved. Files of both types are now preserved on importing, can be edited directly, and for both NCX and OPF, as well as XHTML, Sigil will now run validation check and list all discovered issues, allowing to quickly navigate to their locations for fixing.

The Table Of Contents editor was removed in favor of a new Table Of Contents sidebar that allows both navigation and TOC generation. By the way, now when you open an HTML file, TOC will be automatically generated from all header tags.

Some changes will affect your workflow in different ways. A very important important change here is removal of support for Sigil's former proprietary SGF file format. EPub is Sigil's native file format now. For full list of changes please refer to the change log.

FlightCrew, the ePub validation tool, got minor changes in user interface and several bug fixes.

Both Sigil and FlightCrew are available for Linux (installer, source code), Windows and Mac. Sigil's download page is here, FlightCrew's one is here.

Speaking of development plans, John is still getting used to the project, and his primary objectives for the next version (0.5) are a hyperlink editor and spell-checking. After that he's likely to focus on EPUB v3 support once the specification is done and out.
