Epson and AVASYS to launch automatic printer driver download service for Linux

Epson and AVASYS announced today plans to launch a service that will enable the automatic downloading of printer drivers by simply connecting an Epson inkjet printer to a Linux powered computer.

The service is supposed to start at the end of April 2011 along with Ubuntu 11.04 which will be the first distribution to provide this feature. it is based on Open Printing Database and will work for any Linux Standard Base compliant Linux distribution. A total of 268 Epson inkjet printer models manufactured since 2005 will be supported.

  1. Since Ubuntu is not Linux, (but only one distribution between others), I hope EPSON gives ability to ALL distributions to perform this task

there are many ways to do this

  2. Well, if it’s available in Ubuntu, it’s available anywhere (so naively :)). What’s more important, in my opinion, is how other vendors respond (if they do).
