Carla, omnivore audio/MIDI plugins host, released

After 2+ years of work Filipe Coelho finally called it a day and released the first stable version of Carla — an audio/MIDI plugins host for Linux and Windows.

Carla is omnivore indeed: it loads both LV2, VST, DSSI, and LADSPA plug-ins, and beyond that it supports GIG, SF2, and SFZ samples via FluidSynth and LinuxSampler.

The host ships with a bunch of internal plug-ins, including ZynAddSubFX synth which, sadly, isn't part of the pre-compiled packages yet. Filipe will do his best to improve it and make it available in the future releases.

The processing chain is actually a graph that you can configure the way you like on the Patchbay tab. Oh, and did we mention that you can control plug-ins via MIDI CC and OSC?

The binaries for Linux and Windows are available for downloading on the KXStudio website. The .deb packages for Ubuntu are in the KXStudio PPA. The latest source code is hosted on GitHub.

In case you want to discuss the application with fellow musicians, there's an ongoing thread on the LinuxMusicians forum featuring the developer.

  1. Does Carla come from some ex-girlfriend or an homage to tech writer carla schroder who wrote the excellent Book of Audacity.

@Ned, all of Filipe’s apps have female names that start with a “C” or a “K”. Given that, I’d rather not speculate :)
