Simon Eugster, a Kdenlive and frei0r developer, published a teaser of a new free application for Linux that generates high quality ultra slow motion video. Here is that teaser:

This demo features a record from Nikon D7000 with 24 fps processed into 1300 fps. As you can guess, simply duplicating frames wouldn't do the trick, so we tortured Simon a bit to reveal more details.

What he told us is that his app, nicknamed slowmoVideo, uses optical flow GPU-KLT+FLOW library. The library tells the application where every pixel appears in the next frame, so the application calculates interpolation between two frames and generates new intermediate frames. The user interface is written in Qt, and FFmpeg is used for importing and exporting.

Source code will be available in a month or so after publishing Bachelor thesis, so let's just be really patient and try not to drool all over the place :) Judging by the teaser the waiting is well worth it.
